You want nuts?

Try listening to, on an auto-shuffle, Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now," but also try being a white male of 28 years, 364 days, and 14 hours of age, at 5:35 PM on an idle Tuesday . . . and then singing along to yourself with it.

"Trying to get away into the night,

And then you put your arms around me and we tumble to the ground and then you say . . .

I think we're alone now . . . (*alone now*) . . .

There doesn't seem to be anyone around . . .

I think we're alone now . . . (*alone now*) . . .

The beating of our hearts is the only sound . . . "

Fuck.

Let's go buy some shit.

Re: also

I wish I could remember what I'd buy at the mall, if I was a 10-13 year old girl in and around 1987.

Re: also

I would say purple leg-warmers and a neon pink t-shirt. Oh, and a scrunchie to cinch the shirt high on the waist.

I was 6 in '87. But I and always have been a fashionista.

Sounds fantastic.

Would Ray-Bans have been out of the question?

Hrm... yes, I think so. But only because Blues Brothers is an amazing movie.

And thanks to you, I have that lovely song stuck in my head!

Legwarmers are from the earlier years of the 80s.

Pink Tretorn sneakers, a blue sweatshirt over a pink Ocean Pacific tee and tapered jeans. We were a poor lot, so we tapered them with safety pins... on the outside. I also had a perm in '87. I was 12 and in 7th grade.

Re: Legwarmers are from the earlier years of the 80s.

My cousin had a perm of sorts, like many girls, where the hair was in a poofy bang in the top front of the face.

Re: Legwarmers are from the earlier years of the 80s.

LOL, my mom has Aquanet, and she used it from that era, too.

When I was starting to get old enough to care about hair, I'd use some Aquanet . . . just to be a cheap fucker, so I wouldn't have to go out and get my own hairspray, heh.

Or, the mid-years of the 2000's.

Tretorns, YES! However, I think you mean the Tretorn swoosh would have been pink. I had about 234987394 pairs of those things. Also, Keds, and Reebok high-tops with velcro closures.

Vuarnet - though that could be closer to 1989, around the time wearing a single dangly earring came into style.

And your tapered (probably acid wash) jeans would have been tucked into slouch socks, unless you were wearing stirrup pants, because no tucking is necessary with those little gems!

Re: Or, the mid-years of the 2000's.

Yes by pink, I meant the swoosh. My feet were still growing then so my mom refused to buy me more than 2 pairs... I had a plaid pair as well. Pink of course.

I hope stirrup pants never ever come back into style. Acid wash tried to make one last year but I think people knew better not to go there again... although making your own was easy enough with a spray bottle and some bleach.

Re: Or, the mid-years of the 2000's.

Were jelly shoes before or after 1987?

Some things were so short-lived, like Hypercolor.

Re: Or, the mid-years of the 2000's.

Jelly shoes were early 1980's. I got my first pair in 1983, and they gave me the worst blisters you can imagine. Still, I wore them, because they were cool. They were transparent magenta with glitter inside. Later I got a pearlescent white pair also.

You can still buy them - or rather, you can buy them again. The same ones.

Hypercolor was later on - I was about 13 or 14 when I got mine, making it about 1989 or 1990. Mine was this ugly olive green colour that would turn yellow. Ew. It was a gift.

Yeah, that shit's rough.

Like, I remember the "Locomotion" song from right around that same time as Tiffany. Plus Debbie Gibson . . . all of this is my cousin's fault. She loved all of it in the late 1980s when we were kid-ish enough to lap up this stuff.

S'okay, slightly, however, since I was able to remember those idle days listening to that stuff with all of the childhood stuff.

I have yet to want to find my way to the roof of the tallest building of the Ren Cen and jump off it.

I wish I could have a slumber party. I wake up from a bed in the morning, and everything in my back hurts so fucking bad that I couldn't possibly sleep on a floor/outside/in a tent/et cetera.

However, if I had my way, I'd probably have an all-nighter at a computer lab with whatever first-person-shooter everyone was up for, like CounterStrike.

Hahaha, you're such a boy.

Slumber parties were the days, man. If my apartment were bigger I think I would have one. Everyone could bring a sleeping bag and we'd watch scary movies. I guess the crank-calling portion of the party would be out of the question these days, though.

So, is it your birthday? Or is your birthday tomorrow?

I must cave into the power of the Tiffany, in order to have the power of the Sauce.

Although, when people start playing with my hair to invent new styles, that's when I have to say "when."

Some things are just too powerful not to acknowledge.

I remember being in a band that played a punk version of that song. The guitar run up into the key-change is a real bastard to get right.

Happy Birthday.

Tiffany, at least, would be easier to do than most Mariah Carey songs, especially with regard to vocals.
