The best thing that could have possibly happened today . . . did so.

Appalachian State defeated #5 ranked Michigan 34-32 in Ann Arbor.

I am very happy for the Mountaineers. The defeat of the Wolverines puts Appalachian State in a unique situation in college football history. It's rare that a AA school defeats a team like Michigan. For those that didn't know who Appalachian State Mountaineers were before today, well, they'll know now. They're a small school in Boone, North Carolina, and they have an elite AA football program . . . elite enough to grapple with the bigger schools, that's for sure.

How do Michigan fans deal with this reality? I expect Michigan to drop from #5 in the nation right out of the Top 25. I also expect a bunch of gloating Michigan State fans and other Michigan rivals to want to rub this one in the face. Actually, that couldn't be a more foolish move.

You see, I've been calling for the end of the joke that is Lloyd Carr in charge of college football royalty. This man has never proved to me more than the ability to loosely manage blue chip recruits that probably would have went to the school even if the program was run by a donkey.

There have been times where I was certain that Lloyd had no credibility, and the inability to take this team and stick a W over Ohio State is part of that indictment. I mean, could Lloyd have been more dense than to stick with two albatrosses for quarterbacks, consecutively, in John Navarre and Chad Henne? Blue chips my rear end! Between the two, in 6 games vs. Ohio State, these QBs have one win!

I believe the loss to Appalachian State actually is the conviction. To me, losing to a team that everyone should have seen coming, literally, that is an utter failure of Lloyd's tenure. In 2005 and 2006, Appalachian State won back to back championships at the AA level! Lloyd had all summer to shape these kids into realizing that they were playing an A-caliber school. This was not the type of school that was to be ignored!

So, laugh it up all you want. The louder the howls, the better the chance that Michigan's Mary Sue will lift a heel and kick Lloyd with it. The school might even get lucky and land a decent coach.

Or, you could be wise, like Michigan used to be, and ignore this day. Keep quiet. Let Michigan's brass continue to think it is a top notch program for football. You can reap years of benefit. There are morons afoot who will take the silence as a sign of respect.

As for college football in general, uh, I can't thank you enough, Michigan. I can skip most of this season. This saves me a lot of time.

Above all . . .

Congratulations to Appalachian State. You guys should reach new levels of celebration. You did more than enough things right. You deserve the jubilation.

One of my LJ pals went there. I was talking with him a few months ago about how that might be a nice Labor Day vacation weekend, to go up to Ann Arbor.

And how!

Is this not unlike watching the team win another championship?

it really is.. only this gets a lot more notice then the championships.. everyone is talking abou this one.. all the sports websites are leading off with it.. ESPN radio keeps playing our broadcast.. I mean people in sports paid attn to the natl championships.. but with this one eveyone in the country recognizes it which is awesome to hear about my little alma mater on national sports news.... so while the national championships elated me.. this one is great but on a different level because everyone is seeing it.. because Michigan has a big name..

the problem becomes now.... who will ever schedule us again.. i mean we have games lined up with Va tech... georgia.. florida.. and possilbly LSU in upcoming years.. but I am not sure you know this seveal MAC teams that had empty games would not schedule us because they said we re too good.. Next year we do not have any bowl level team scheduled and we might have just sealed the fact that we will not get one.. We are having to play a div 2 this year because people are scared to play us.. sigh.. i guess it is a good dilemma but a delimma nonetheless..

I knew about the MAC story - that's been my argument for the MAC to join AA. They're that bad, and I think the best AA teams would slaughter them.

Nobody can really take away anything from App State at this point. Sure, it was a 99 percent chance pre-game that Michigan would roll a W, but apparently two things happened:

1. Michigan spent the summer pretending like App State was Toledo.

2. App State spent the summer pretending like Michigan was all that stood in the way of a third AA championship.

I like App's take much better.

it's weird as shit. my folks were down to see the baby, so we're all in a sports bar during the game and there were like 20 people with Michigan shirts on in the middle of Chapel Hill! some of the people actually started to root for Appalachian State (not sure if the beer had anything to do with it). i thought they'd dick it up at the end, but when i heard the kicker's name i said it was over. just a feeling i had.

it was fun though. nothing like watching one of those things surrounded by people. even our waiter was sitting down with us (they whole wait staff had on UNC jerseys) watching the end of the game and the Michigan coaches' last season.

For years, Michigan's special teams - the kicking and punting - have been extremely poor. For such a large school, they've had some bad beats at the kicker's expense, especially.

If it was basketball season, there wouldn't be any U of M gear in that bar. Tar Heels!

christ, you said a mouthful there. basketball owns this city. Butch Davis is in his first year here at the head of the football program so maybe he can knock Wake out as the football king in this area.

As an MSU fan, I've been laughing my ass off all weekend. All the sports talk people in the state have had U-M winning the national championship this year.

As being an Ohio State fan, I am so loving this. However, being a Georgia Southern fan, I hate it. See, Georgia Southern and Appalachian State are rivals.
