A Few Sauces . . . [Apr. 10th, 2004|06:00 am]
Sauce1977
Given a search of IMDB with keyword 'sauce,' I found:

http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0766533/ Christina Saucerman
http://us.imdb.com/name/nm1258419/ Sauce
http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0766518/ Anthony Sauce
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0162903/ Catfish in Black Bean Sauce (Movie, also sounds like a good dish)
http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0374514/ Aunt Jane and the Tobasco Sauce (circa 1902, awaits 5 votes)

Though, none of them are related to me, Sauce1977.

Current List of Films Watched and the IMDB Ratings.

Note: Sauce1977 does not always vote with a fair-and-balanced mind. Some films receive horrible scores, not because they are poor, but sometimes for other reasons. Not all poor scores are films that I despise. Most films are treated lightly. List does not cover every film Sauce1977 has ever watched, and it certainly needs a couple hours of additions.

Total in Catalog of Logged Films: 428 (and counting).

Yeah, but, c'mon... "Aunt Jane and the Tobasco Sauce"? What a great name for a movie!

And Zardoz totally deserves more than a four! It's an ideological train wreck that you can't take your eyes off of!

Yes!

Like Plan 9 from Outer Space, Zardoz is a train wreck. Also include A Boy and His Dog to that similar goofy category.

In terms of all of them, I merely enjoyed them very much . . . while . . . they were train wrecks. :D

I just re-voted on all 418 of them. It's getting to the point where if I could recall a bunch of the films I watched as a kid, I wouldn't remember them well.

I barely remember Plan 9 and A Boy and His Dog . . . only that I saw Zardoz so relatively recently (college . . . 1997-98) is the reason why I remember it.

Same with the earlier, non-Clooney Solyaris. Good stuff . . . saw it years ago, can't quite remember all of it, remember the feeling more than the film.

Yeah, I actually have a DVD copy of Zardoz for its total inexcplicableness.

Funny story, I apparently saw A Boy and His Dog when I was like three or four. Some neighbor's father rented it, thinking it really was a movie about a boy and his dog. I have no recollection of this, mind you, but if I ever get the urge to devour my girlfriend, I'll let you know.

Hahahaha! That's awesome, corruption by Don Johnson and post-apocalypse at an early age, accidentally, at that.

Help me remember the completely bizarre big behemoth voice . . . what it said . . . I often mix this up and the line from Fear and Loathing as well . . .

Is Zardoz's big voice . . . did it say . . .

"The gun . . . is good . . . the penis . . . is EVIL!"

Got it off IMDB . . .

Ah, yes it was so . . .

Memorable Quotes from
Zardoz (1974)

Zardoz: The gun is good.
Exterminators: The gun is good.
Zardoz: The penis is evil. The penis shoots seeds, and makes new life, and poisons the earth with a plague of men, as once it was. But the gun shoots death, and purifies the earth of the filth of brutals. Go forth and kill!

Why yes. Yes it did. And then it spit AK-47s out of its mouth. Dozens of them.

That was so crazy . . . oh so good.

Sean Connery has probably spent a few good nights of drinking to wash memories of that film down the tubes.

If I could find a copy of that short silent film from 1902, I'd watch it.

I think I remember watching Wings, a silent film around the WW1 era of flight . . . I just can't remember it well, not like I remember Freaks . . . man, that was crazy, and it was pretty good.

Yeah, I'm with you there. Freaks was pretty good, I saw it pretty recently. As for the older stuff, I did get a chance to watch a whole bunch of 1920's silent melodramas for a class on the Jazz age when I was in school... though... really... I don't remember much about them.

Golem though, I saw recently, and that was excellent. Weird experimental cropping stuff that directors wouldn't even think of doing these days, like all the action taking place in a little oval on one side of the screen, the rest totally black. (Like leterbox lines, etc.)

Golem is a hard find.

My roomate has Netflix, and he's a big comedy film fan. That's something that I have a weakness . . . traditionally, I was all over the bizarre and the sci-fi and the horror.

I'd feel like a poop-heel if I asked him to fill up his list with movies that I really want to grab . . . and I'm totally out of range for Netflix in the budget.

My money is always shot to hell from impulse rentals at video stores. I think it's the hunter/gatherer in me that likes to rummage through titles on a shelf.

Oh yeah!

I mean, I had it in my personal collection and loved it so . . . but my mom told me to save it for Xmas . . . and I lost it in a pile of clothes that I didn't take with me to California, yeah.

I gotta send back home, uh, for it, but backups are always welcome.

I'm not quite sure, but for some reason, I could have sworn that I voted on some films on IMDB . . . and I've returned to my list of votes, only to not find them there.

Like Lost Highway . . . for example.

I remember voting on that.

I'll have to go back and watch it again, but I wasn't all that fond of "Silence of the Lambs". It was alright, but 'best picture'?

You sat through "Leonard part 6"? Damn, I couldn't get through that one as a kid.

I had a hard time with that one too as a kid.

What pissed me off, as a child, watching Leonard Part 6, was the fact that I found out from the store clerk that there were no other Leonard films.

The film was bad, but as a kid, I thought naming it Part 6 with no other parts was a lie.

Maybe they did have other parts planned, like Star Wars . . . but no one really paid attention to the oddity of Star Wars because they didn't put "part IV" blatantly on the packaging.

I, however, really really really liked Silence of the Lambs. I've watched it a few times, and while the film is clearly not the best film of all time, it really thrilled me and made me enjoy it.

Part of the problem with my rating style is that I may hate a film, but give it a good rating.

Or, I may like a film, like Plan 9 from Outer Space, but give it a really poor rating.

There really is no science to my film ratings, as of yet.

It's very whimsical, in a way.

On Science with Ratings of Films.

1. Think of how absolutely absurd the MPAA ratings are.

2. Think about how peoples' taste is rather subjective.

Conclusion:

There is little science involved with ratings.

Ah, but wait . . .

With me, it's a kind of a science, but again, it's probably bullshit.

As already mentioned, part of the problem with my rating style is that I may hate a film, but give it a good rating.

For instance, I may not hate a film . . . well . . . in the case of Jackson's LOTRs, I really really despise Tolkien and the self-important creation of a whitey mystical magical universe. Come on, white people. Even Star Wars had Lando. While I don't care for Star Trek all that much, they did have Sulu.

So, my primary dislike of the entire universe of LOTR is pretty darn stupid, considering I do like the Harry Potter movie series. Plainly, that is pretty much the same story . . . only it's less-winded, and it involves children. I tend to like stories with children.

So, my own hypocritical long-windedness aside, LOTR in my book, on pure taste alone, would get a horrible 1 out of 10.

Alas, I'd be unfair to give it a 1. LOTR series is technically pretty solid, and Jackson's a bad-ass director. He didn't do his works in vain. I would have liked to see 84 minute versions of each of the films, and never show the scenery, since I hate the long-winded movies (exception: Martin Scorsese), but for LOTRs I have to give it something.

Or, I may like a film, like Plan 9 from Outer Space, but give it a really poor rating.

Technically, Plan 9 is probably deserving of the quote "worst film of all time."

It's horrible editing, Lugosi died during production . . . half the film has a pathetic stand-in that doesn't show his face . . . there's really little story, and it's just really kooky-stupid-weird.

However, it's very weird in a good way, as I generally love the pieces of shit that Ed Wood turned out . . . I know the man was a cross-dresser, and no one's ever proven to me that he thought of himself as hot shit of film direction, which is a big plus in my book.

I haven't the ability to give Plan 9 a great rating, as it's pure trash . . . but I love it so.

There really is no solid science to my film ratings, as of yet. Like life, it's very situational.

It's very whimsical, in a way.

The Scorsese exception.

This applies to Stanley Kubrick as well.

Scorsese and Kubrick (probably a few other directors) could film a 3 hour and 45 minute film of people shitting in bath-tubs, and damn it, I'd defend the artistic merits of such a sordid film to the end.

Kubrick, thankfully, isn't alive, so half of this theory can never be proven.

Given Scorsese's general long-winded film lengths, we may yet see a Scorses production called Tub Shitter.

Even though the last two Star Wars have been sub-par, as Lucas is now treading into Howard Hughes-land with his obsessive-compulsive over-thought and control of his series . . . and shitting up his earlier works with re-worked scenes like Greedo's "shoot first" scene in the 1977 first-ditty, I cannot shoot down the last two Star Wars because shit, I really really really really really really do like Star Wars: A New Hope. I grew up with the film, I've watched it a few hundred times, and dammit, it never gets to me. Also, I happen to totally dig the orchestral piece "Battle of Yavin" so much that one day, I played it on repeat all day, just because I'm a little off-kilter that way with some songs.

Hopefully Lucas won't film strange films about pooping.

Anyway, that's part of the kink to my ratings. Just a few million thoughts.

Re: The Scorsese exception.

The only beef i have with Kubrick is that every time he directed a movie that was taken from a book ,he completely turned it upside down. Like The Shining was a great movie, but as far as an adaption goes its not even close to the original book written by Stephen King. For one thing the weapon jack used in the book was a crouquet mallet not an axe. And the black guy is the hero of the book. Unlike in the movie where he gets his arm chopped off and dies in the hallway. Same thing with A Clockwork Orange. The famous all white outfits that they wear in the movie were actually all black in the book and Alex is supposed to be only 14 whereas i think Malcom Mcdowell was about 30 when he appeared in a clockwork orange. Kubrick was one of the greatest directors ever, but i think he was better when he was working with original material.

Re: The Scorsese exception.

Some of his earlier work is the bomb.

It's harder to find, but it's truly wonderful.

Also, a lot of people think Eyes Wide Shut really sucks, but I have seen far worse. It's a shame that he died . . . he was a good director.

My favorite Kubrick is 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Many novels are adapted to fit a better style on screen. Of all the books I've read, a lot of them are a huge pain in the ass due to the expansive realms the authors create.

It's really hard to go word-for-word . . . from book to screenplay . . . however, with the right wit, one can direct anything from a book and make it a winner. Fear and Loathing is pretty word-for-word from the book . . . it does an interesting job of handling a totally bizarre world as painted in the novel by HST.

Favorite Lines from one of my favorite films.

Silence of the Lambs . . .

Jame "Buffalo Bill" Gumb: It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again. It does this whenever it's told.

Maybe because of delerium from exhaustion.

I'm in a talkative mood today.

I've fought the urge to respond probably 20 times today, to hit "Post Comment."

Yet, I've posted a lot . . . usually I'm not this posty . . . self-posty-self-responsy . . . I don't mean to freak out folks who just joined the Sauce boat.

However, I rarely meet a person I don't like.

There are a handful I truly dislike, but that's from situations in reality.

If this makes any sense, it makes sense to you.

Sometimes, I can't make sense of my sense.

Posting a list of films I've watched . . . although incomplete, if feels like I'm showing my tits to the internet.
