Space Station Astronaut to Vote From Orbit

October 18, 2004 - AP

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - The space station's newest astronaut will cast his ballot in the presidential election from 225 miles up, with NASA (news - web sites)'s help.

Leroy Chiao said Monday that the space agency has worked hard with local and federal authorities so he can vote from the orbiting complex, his home until spring. He will cast his ballot via a secure e-mail connection, much the same way another astronaut did from Russia's Mir space station (news - web sites) in 1997.

U.S. astronauts, most of whom live around Houston, won the right to vote from space under a Texas bill signed into law by then-Gov. George W. Bush.

"Definitely, I'll be exercising my civic right and my civic duty," Chiao said.

Chiao arrived at the station over the weekend via a Russian Soyuz spacecraft that also carried two cosmonauts, one of whom will spend the next six months with him in orbit.

The astronaut he is replacing, Mike Fincke, said he, too, will vote — but by absentee ballot from Russia. That is where Fincke will be on Election Day, recuperating from a six-month space station mission that is due to end with a landing in Kazakhstan this weekend.

I lost most of my scanned images in the Great Electronic Hard Drive Kerblooie of '04. Yet, if I quit as a result, it would be too easy . . .

Wide-Eyed Smile.

Rainy days . . . much fun.

Haha, the things we do... when we are bored out of our minds!

I'm not really that bored . . .

Sometimes people might think that I have some sort of attention defecit . . .

It's actually the opposite. I get tunnel vision, in a way, the ol' one-track mind . . . I have extreme patience, and I'm pretty focused with little difficulty locking on to a task.

That was a recent notion, given the breaking news coverage of the amazing rain phenomenon in LA.

Haha, well, I appluad the effort. Sounds like something I would do, if it were raining, and I had the ability to make it widescreen, cause I'd need to.

The only thing wide about me are my ears.

It's interesting to note how the scanner turned out the images when I lined myself up the 'widescreen' way on the glass.

Even my face stretched out as a result.

I'm just a skinny bastard, and it's not because I'm anorexic or bulemic . . . last week, I cooked up and ate an entire package of bun-sized smokies.

Yea, I'm really not skinny. Turns out you a price for being a lineman in high school. And on that note, off to the gym. Guh.

Actually, that *is* a sign of ADD. Just not the hyper kind, which is ADHD. initially, we didn't think Jake could have ADD because of that exact reason, but it turns out that's a symptom. :)

Also, I just flicked you in the butt.

After the third post on rain, it was time to do something else.

I have absolutely no understanding of ADD and ADHD. In particular, ADD . . . the symptoms I have absolutely no idea . . .

Most likely, the casual observer will think I'm a dissheveled 340 lb. defensive tackle, with a pumpkin head.
