Bo Schembechler apparently uttered this:

Remember this: WHEN YOU ARE THE LEADER, YOU ARE THE ORGANIZATION. You are the company, the school, the team. You are it. Now if you want to act like some kind of jerk where guys who worked for the program and led the program and sacrificed for the program are not welcome to come back—well, you're not going to have much of a program. And you certainly won't have a family. But if you respect your history, you'll get a lot more in return.

Lloyd Carr, I'll welcome you back . . . as the team's bassett hound.

You loved Michigan. You never wanted to leave. You knew its history, and you did almost everything right.

You loved Bo Schembechler. You tried to honor him in every way. But you failed in a few respects.

If you stay too long, you won't be a champion.

You were a man who entered in the storm of Gary Moeller and his disgraced exit, rode that talent pool to a national championship share, gave the state some solid records most seasons, but ultimately could not put the last nail in the coffin. You were apparently too good and/or foolish to lead your team to do just that.

Take the latest example.

Why should I have had to watch Chad Henne play a game he could not win? Henne was banged up enough to almost be taken out of the game to not return. He did come off the field at one point. However, you put him right back in there. Henne finished the game 11/34 with 68 passing yards.

I don't care if Mallett can't get it done, either. Henne clearly couldn't. His arm was spent. GIVE THE TEAM SOME LIFE. GIVE THEM A CHANCE TO WIN. GAMBLE!

Weelllll . . .

Everyone will hold you up for being a great guy and a father to these young men.

I'll hold you down for being a good guy whose team lost a few too many dubious games. I will not shake your hand. These kids clearly were not driven as hard as they could have been. And when you can't lead these boys into being better men, you better follow along with the crew and get the best out of the boys that you absolutely can get.

In case the next coach doesn't get the message . . .

WIN, DAMN YOU.

It was TIME, LLOYD, for YOU to LEAVE a LONG TIME AGO!

I have zero faith that Mary Sue Coleman and Bill Martin will replace you with a better candidate. Michigan fans will likely settle for less. Mary Sue Coleman and Bill Martin, in sum, for the body of Michigan, are settling for less.

I could care less about the lack of college scholarships in comparison to when Bo roamed the halls as the coach. 85? 65? You still have to recruit the winners.

You're steadfast about following all the rules to become a proper champion. Class. The idea of chivalry, well, you seem to want to define yourself and the school in it.

I got a huge problem with that.

You can never live up to the code of chivalry.

ALL humans are dumb beasts. Every last one of them, including yourself, Lloyd.

You can win some, or enough, while following the letter of the law. However, you can't dominate unless you slide around some of the rules. And Michigan was never about just winning most of them.

When you represent a university in this era, you HAVE TO BE A POLITICIAN.

When Michigan lost for weeks after the 42-39 Ohio State game in 2006, you stood there like man's best friend while Jim Tressel and Urban Meyer led the chant of "ANYONE BUT MICHIGAN." Was that your goal, Lloyd? Winning for Michigan? What did that inspire, standing pat while the enemies carved up your spot? BE A MOUTHPIECE.

You love this game, and you love Michigan, and you'll miss it. I understand. You worked it with everything you had. You were absolutely you.

Unfortunately, I won't miss you.

Even if the next coach inspires the club to a winless season, I still will not miss you.

You clearly won't miss the press, but they shouldn't care much about you when you're gone.

For the rest of my days, I will pretty much stumble upon your video clips and your assorted words and hear this.

If it's pretty easy, then why can't Ohio State have more than a .500 record against JoePa?

Probably because that's one of the games they overlook on the way to Michigan?

I'm still in awe of that team bowing a dumb loss to Illinois.

I think this year, more than a few intramural squads from other conferences could have taken some of these Big Ten teams...

Pretty much, this year's Big Ten was pretty wack-ass.

But the overall weakness was apparent in every conference.

Well yeah. No conference was all that strong this year, but the SEC, Big XII, Big East and Pac-10 were all on an upper level of strength while the Big Ten and ACC are the ass of the ass.

ASSSS TO ASSSS!

It just seemed like a whole batch of ass, judging from the Top 10 Who Will Likely Lose This Week, each week.
