March 21st . . . LiveJournal User Protest Day, and My Response. [Mar. 21st, 2008|05:00 am]
Sauce1977

In case you didn't know, LiveJournal-related melodrama peaked this month. As of today, one lacks ability to create a new account without advertisements.

This Encyclopedia Dramatica entry tells the sum of it.

Anyway, for those that are link-phobic or link-lazy, Americans, as far as I can tell, don't like Russian media companies more than they don't like American media companies that behave the exact same way. Go ahead and argue that SUP is different and somehow more sinister than Six Apart. Here's my approximate auto-response.

I offer a simple solution. There are other programs of similar nature.

No more ads, right? This should solve your problem, oh self-improtant free account blogger. Oh wait, LJ/other blogs, YouTube/other v-logs, and MySpace/Facebook networks are filled with mostly high-school and college-age kids, what was I thinking?!?

I can hear the approximate noise already:

WE ARE ENTITLED TO LIVE FREELY FOR NO MONEY SPENT WHILE MAKING ALL KINDS OF MONEY AND NO TAXES AND WE NEED FAT FREE VEGAN LIFESTYLES AND HEALTH CARE FOR FREE AND EVERY SPERM IS SACRED AND EVERY CRIMINAL SHOULD BE REHABILITATED AND PEOPLE ARE DECENT AND GOOD AT HEART . . .

The idealism bleeds from its orifices here in blogland. The internet feels like a college campus.

Anyway, I'll be around, as usual, blogging as such, and subsequently working against your liberal arts major ideals.

Your ADZ Heer

I don't understand how sickening it could be to the freebie people to have their journal look somewhat like a NASCAR racer. I've seen the accounts as described . . . hardly obtrusive. No popups, no nothing, just regular panel ads that pretty much get treated like other ads on a TV set, et cetera . . . your mind kind of fast-forwards past and around it.

There was all of one problem with the ads that displayed on plus accounts, in the history . . . I remember some malware incident related to an ad, either it infected the computer of one who loaded the page with the ad, or if someone linked from the ad, the linked page was infected. Either way, I think that was a Six Apart gaffe, and everyone learned a good lesson and had s'mores that evening.

Here at camp LiveJournal, we have plenty of melodrama. This felt like a poop in the pool day.
