Go wings :)

(Look if I can watch the craptacular Lions for 15 years, I can follow the decent Detroit teams as well... )

I'm especially happy for Dan Cleary... I find it hard to believe he's the first Newfie to get his name on the cup.

I heard that, and yeah, amazing that he's the only guy so far.

As for craptacular Lions, well, I just turned on the NHL recently. I'm no different.

Hockey is something close to a religion in Canada (that and Tim Horton's, and he was a Hockey player) We have the ECHL Salmon Kings out here on the west coast, and I've seen more games of there's than my local football team when I lived in Sheffield (the mighty mighty Sheffield Wednesday... (ha!)).

People still care in Detroit, contrary to the popular belief of empty seats and pictures of people with disinterested looks on their faces.

4 in 11 years. After a while, 1st round just doesn't have that allure.

Oh that doesn't surprise me at all... it is Hockeytown USA, and one of the original 6 (even if you did steal the team from here :)), and one guesses there's a fair percentage of fans from just to the south of Detroit that go to the matches.

Back when the Sega Megadrive hit the UK, the ice hockey game was one of the standard packages, and Hockey WAS the Red Wings to my generation, as they were the best team on that game (in a sport that is definitely one of the minor sports in the UK).

Anyways, very happy for the good folks of Detroit.

Local radio is covering the event through the night - there was some guy from Toronto on the phone, arguing whether or not the Wings should take Hossa or his Sundin . . . the radio guy selected Hossa (subject: free agency and new guys next year), and the Toronto fan got pissy about Sundin being passed over . . . "have you seen Sundin in the playoffs?"

Well, I don't know what's stranger, local Detroit radio coverage in the wee hours for the championship, talking about new Wings at this hour, or some guy from Toronto calling up quarter to 2 AM to try and peddle Sundin to our club . . .

Any GM who would take Sundin over Hossa would be run out of town.

That's what the radio guy pretty much said without saying that. He wanted Hossa because he has a lot more years left in him.

Hockeytown in name only. Philly is definitely the best non-Minnesota hockey market in the States.

Pffft. I'll get that from every city, but this place never stops with the hockey. They have big ice rinks all over the area. No way.

Looking around, it would seem Philly and Detroit are on a par for support. What it seems to me, as a casual observer, is that the Wings are unusual in having a reasonably large Canadian support base for a US team. I'm not sure any of the other US teams has that (maybe Buffalo?). I certainly know several die hard Red Wings fans out here in BC (most of whom pre-date the Canucks joining the NHL, mind).

Russia loves its Wings. We've made enough of their players stars since Federov defected.
